Pumpkin Pie

I made my first foray into pie this week.  I LOVE pumpkin, which is why this time of year is my favorite.  I can take or leave the holidays, but I LOVE pumpkin.  I wish it were available all year round.

So I bravely decided to try pumpkin pie out of fresh pumpkin – a feat I had been told to avoid because fresh pumpkin pie can be stringy and dense and weird.  But I couldn’t resist.  After I made my pumpkin oatmeal bread with a real pumpkin, I decided it couldn’t be too hard.

I was kind of wrong.  Pumpkin pie (at least the recipe I used) isn’t hard, persay, but it is time-consuming.

First I used the pie crust recipe from The Art of Simple Food by Alice Waters.  I highly recommend this book.  Very simple food- but very detailed instructions about how to cook it the best possible way.

So to start, I cooked the whole pumpkin.  Just stuck the whole thing on the oven rack for an hour at 350ºF.  After that I sliced it open, scooped out the seeds, then scooped out the flesh and put it in the food processor.  I processed it for about 10 minutes total- occasionally turning it off and scraping down the sides.  I think this is the key to making it smooth and not stringy!

Next I started the crust.  Just butter, flour, and water basically.  Mixed it up, formed balls, and put them in the fridge.  Then I took them out and Puppers jumped on the table and ate one.  Good thing I only had enough pumpkin for one pie.

Next I rolled it,

Put it in the pan, forked the bottom,

Filled it with beans

And blind baked it

In the meantime I mixed up the pumpkin with eggs, sugar, evaporated milk, and spices, and when the crust was done I poured it in.  The filling recipe was from Betty Crocker.

Bake for about an hour, and yay pumpkin pie!

By the time the pie was done baking, the sun had gone down and the lighting was bad :-( .

See Puppers hiding behind the trash can?

She’s so cute!

It was SO GOOD.  Definitely try it.

Sweater death.

Okay, so I finished my minimalist cardigan (haven’t updated rav yet, but I will soon), and words can’t describe how horrifying it is.

The sleeves are waaaayyy too big and drooopy.  They look like those mutton sleeves.  Gross.

So I did something you’re never, ever supposed to do.  I broke the knitting laws.  And I am not ashamed to say that I….

Cut.  My.  Sweater.

You see, after I seamed and re seamed and re seamed FOUR times, and it still looked like death, I just decided to seam the shoulders and sleeves narrower, and cut the excess.

Don’t worry, I heavily reinforced it.  And I figured that if it didn’t work, I was going to unravel the whole thing anyway.

I’m seriously upset about this.  I have yet to find the perfect sweater.  And just when I thought I’d finally knit it, it looks like death.  Sigh.

So I’m going to wear my hacked up sweater to work today.  I mean, it’s not even flattering this way.  Bleh.

Pictures tomorrow if I feel like embarrassing myself about it.

Macbook Pro

Ooooh I got a new computer!

Here she is with my old one.  So pretty!  I remember when I got my iBook and I felt like it was the sleekest, shinyest computer ever.  How wrong I was!

Unfortunately, I have to calibrate the battery, so in roughly 10 minutes she will be dead and then I have to let her sit for 5 hours!  Blah!

So, off to watch Glee and finish my knitting!

I am in a dilemma. Matt and I have rearranged our living room for about the 10000th time. And we’re in the process of building a new entertainment center. But it is the one room that I feel isn’t ever the way I want it.

Two walls are a dark teal, the other two are white, and we have a brown sofa. Those pretty much have to stay the way they are.

To give you an idea of what my style is, have a look at my bedroom:

My dresser! I found that mirror at Saver’s and spray-painted it green to compliment my green walls. The orchid was a gift from my secret sister at church :-) . It’s the only plant I’ve been successful at keeping alive. There are a few of my vintage teacups, and my jewelery.  An old fashioned alarm clock from Ikea, and some vintage hankies.  I want to replace that lamp, though!

This is a closeup of the picture that our friend Dave took with his antique camera. It’s probably my favorite picture of us.

Jewels!

This is an old picture of my grandma and her sister, Joann. Grandma is on the left. I love the cute hair and dresses.

I like that Patches is in the mirror. Here you can see my bed (plain white comforter) and my pink curtains. I’m not usually a pink-y type of person, but I like that it all looks kind of vintagey. I’m working on a quilt right now that is shades of green and pink for my bed.

Okay- I’d like to do something similar with the living room. On my list of to-dos, I want to make some throw pillows, a quilt, and re-upholster a couple chairs for reading.

Any other ideas?

I thought I would start posting things I find especially wonderful from Etsy on Sundays.

1.

A wee lightning bug pendant. Awwww. From SWAKbySarah. (This item sold out a long time ago, but I don’t care. It’s still one of my favorites.)

2.

An interesting variation on the “Keep Calm and Carry On” posters that were commissioned by the British government during WWII. From Scream Printing.

3.

Awh I miss my garden. From Happy Family.

4.

I love whales! From BROOKLYNrehab.

5.

Super cute. From marketstoreshoppe.

6.

Again, this item sold out awhile ago, but I think the grey fabric with the mother-of-pearl buttons is the prettiest. And my name does not start with H. From letterperfectdesigns.

7.

Not gonna lie, if I had these notecards, you would all get letters. From luckybeepress.

8.

These are both from one of my all-time favorite etsy shops. There isn’t a single piece of jewelry that isn’t phnomonally gorgeous- and the photography is beautiful, too. From ShySiren.

Anywho, that’s all I’ve got for this week.

Awww, Rory (a.k.a. Puppers or Pupper Pants) has the saddest puppy dog eyes ever!

I was going to say “Matt is a lucky man to have a wife who will knit him a stag scarf”. But then I realized that he’s really not all that lucky unless I actually finish this one. I need ideas for the body of the scarf- straight, grey knitting? I’d rather not. My idea was cables, but it sucks in too much and doesn’t look right. Any ideas?

Got Oil?

Woo! We’re getting our oil today! That means we can stop rationing the 40 gallons we had in our tank and actually turn on the heat!

So I made some bread yesterday from the fabulous book, Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day. I borrowed it from the library, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to buy it. Its fabulous. They don’t lie when they say 5 minutes a day.

Yum! You can’t taste the pumpkin much- its very subtle. But I put some butter and black beans on it today, and it was amazing. Yeah, black beans. I eat them all the time.

Can I just say that I just tripped on my computer cable and the whole thing flew onto the floor, dislodging the screen and smashing the power cable? I just got finished sending an email that said “My iBook is 5 years old, and it’s still kickin’. I almost wish it would bite the dust so I could get a shiny new one!” I guess you have to be careful what you wish for.

Polyvore

Well, I’ve discovered my new favorite website:

On Polyvore, you can drag and drop literally thousands of clothes and accessories to create outfits. There’s shopping info, too, but since most of my clothes come from thrifting or clearance racks (but I look pretty good, I swear!), I use this mostly for inspiration. And hours of time wasting.
